II International

Musica Nueva Màlaga International in collaboration with the village of Frigiliana announces its Second International Festival for Composers, to take place in the picturesque surroundings of Frigiliana village, within easy reach of Málaga International Airport on the Spanish Costa del Sol.

Composers of any nationality, without age limit, are invited to submit a work or works for performance in concert at MNMI 2009.

Participants have the opportunity to reside in Frigiliana, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, located at the foot of Sierras Almijara and Tejeda, a few minutes drive from the Mediterranean Sea.

Concerts will be held in Frigiliana, Seville, and at other nearby Andalusia locations. Concerts will be recorded, and participants will receive a CD copy of their work free of charge for private use only.

Composers whose works are accepted for performance at MNMI 2009 will also be invited to give a presentation about their own music during the Festival and will be recognized as Guest Composer of the MNMI. A certificate will be given to each participant.

Composers unable to attend MNMI 2009 in person, may also have their work(s) performed at the Festival and recorded in concert, by submitting work(s) according to the conditions below, together the appropriate payment.

Places are also available for those wishing to attend the Festival as auditors (listeners) only.

Conditions for the submission of works

Works submitted may be unperformed or previously performed, without restriction.

Scores and parts for all must be received by MNMI, together with a completed form and full payment of €250 (Category1) or €350 (Category2)  by 31 May, 2009.

Composers may submit more than one work. Each additional work  attracts an additional payment of €150 (Category1) or €250 ( Category2). All work is subject to the conditions below.

CATEGORY 1 solo: Works may be scored for solo instrument, to be performed by resident international soloists, with or without electronics. Solo instruments available are flute (doubling piccolo, alto flute) oboe (cor anglais), clarinet (E flat, bass), saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone), trombone, percussion, piano.

CATEGORY 2 ensemble: Works for the MNMI ensemble may be scored for any number of players from the following list: flute (picc, alto), oboe (cor anglais), clarinet (E flat, bass, saxophone), bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, percussion, harp, piano, 2 violins, viola, violoncello, double bass.

The average duration of works should be in the region of 5–10 minutes (Category 1)  or 8-12 minutes (Category2). For works of longer duration or special difficulty, additional payment may be requested to take account of increased rehearsal time.

Acceptance of works
Applicants will be informed as soon as possible after the closing date if their works have been accepted for performance, and if any special conditions apply. Payment made for works not accepted will be immediately refunded.

Conditions for auditors
Applications for places must be received by MNMI, together with a completed form and  payment of €100, by 31 May, 2009.

Festival Programme 2009

The Festival programme consists of composer presentations performer presentations on contemporary instrumental techique concert performances.

Additionally, Composers in Residence will be available for individual consultation, and to offer advice to participants during ensemble rehearsals.

Solo concerts will present a wide variety of composers and styles, with works from each artist’s existing repertoire alongside works submitted by participants.

Meals and accommodation

The village of Frigiliana has a special offer for the participants of MNMI 2009 for them to stay full board in the Hotel Villa in Frigiliana for the price of 55 € a day per person all included.
  The participants will have 3 meals a day and can enjoy the facilities of the swimming pool and the gymnasium, along with the room.

This delightful hotel, inaugarated in 2002, has 5 floors and a total of 35 double rooms. The hotel has an entrance hall with a lift and a reception area which is open 24 hours a day, and offers a safe and money exchange. The hotel also disposes of a cafeteria, a bar, restaurant with a wide menu, air conditioning and is equipped with high chairs for babies and an internet terminal. Also one can make use of the laundry service and have access to medical assistence.

This hotel is situated in the old part of Frigiliana, in the Andaluz province of Málaga. The area is found between the mountains of the natural park of Sierra Tejaeda, Amijara and beautiful beaches of the magnificent Malaga coastline. The guests can enjoy during thier stay marvellous views of the mountains and in the Mudéjar district they can taste a large selection of regional foods. In addition, they can discover the white villages of Andalusia and its impressive landscapes and views.
